David’s crack , DavidsGja - crevices for diving

We drove from Reykjavik to the National Park Pingvellir, which has excellent forest and cliff-side views. You can even dive at Davidsgja if you are a certified diver or hire a local diving instructor. Then we drove to Akureyri for the night. Akureyri was our base for the night for most our trip.&nbsp;

From Akureyri, we drove to Strytan, which is home to a massive hydrothermal chimney that reaches 15mts to the surface. This is a protected nature reserve with numerous smaller chimneys too. We returned to Akureyri for the evening.&nbsp;

Akureyri

From Akureyri, we drove to explore the Diamond Circle, which is located to the North of the Golden Circle. It encompasses Goðafoss waterfall (The Waterfall of the Gods), Lake Mývatn, the boiling mud pools of Mt. Námafjall, Jökulsárgljúfur canyon and the Hljóðaklettar - Echo Rocks. Night stay at Akureyri.&nbsp;

Seydisfjordur

The next day, we drove from Akureyri to Seydisfjordur, a tiny village that is famous for the Blue Church. You can see the Tvísöngur sculptures here. We also hiked around the village and the nearby hills for the rest of the day, taking pictures. We had booked another night at Akureyri.&nbsp;

The next day too, we drove back to Seydisfjordur. But this time, we visited the El Grillo shipwreck. It’s not safe to dive, but you can walk around the coast close to where the wreck lies. After an hour here, we went to the Skalanes Bird Sanctuary to see endemic and migratory flocks. This was our last night in Akureyri.&nbsp;

The next day we drove down Iceland’s stunning South Coast towards Vik. The strange volcanic formations, jagged cliffs, tumultuous sea, and unique flowers make this trip very memorable. En route, you can spot the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon as well. We stayed the night in Vik.&nbsp;

On the seventh day of our tour, we decided to stay and explore Vik. We explored the caves and caverns with a local’s help. We tried the local Smiojan Brugghus beer and ate traditional Icelandic Meat Soup for lunch. Then, we hiked up to the Viking tomb – one of the oldest in Iceland. This was our second night at Vik.&nbsp;

Kleifarvatn

Our next stop was at Kliefarvatn, where we had booked a geothermal dive. This entire region is known for its hot springs, mud pools, and volcanoes. You can stop your car at various viewpoints and watch the active geysers blow. It’s a sight you won’t forget. We slept overnight at Kliefarvatn.&nbsp;

Gardur

Gunnuhver

We continued our drive down the Reykjanes Peninsula and headed to the Garour, which is a massive wild garden. It is home to many species of marine algae that are unique to Iceland. We explored the algal forests and even tasted some of the local algal delicacies. Post-lunch, we visited the Brimklettar cliffs and Gunnuhver hot spring. We stayed at Grindavik close to the hot spring, for the night.&nbsp;

Þingvellir National Park

On our last day in Iceland, we visited Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Silfra. There are many underground springs here to explore. We ended our trip with a tour around the Golden Circle, which is located to the South of the Diamond Circle. It included Geysir Geothermal geysers, Gullfoss waterfall, and Langjokull Glacier.

We love to drive, and Iceland has always been on our list. To drive around Iceland, you need to hold a driving license from your country, valid for more than one year before you visit Iceland. Here, everyone drives on the right-hand side. It’s recommended that you plan your route based on the weather for the day.
